Diabetes is very manageable when you take small, steady steps every day. You don't need to do everything at once — just build these simple habits into your routine and your sugar stays in a safe range.
Every day
- Take your medicines / insulin on time, as prescribed
- Eat meals at regular times — avoid long gaps and late-night eating
- Include more vegetables and fibre; go easy on sweets and fried food
- Walk for 20–30 minutes
- Drink enough water
Every week
- Check your fasting sugar at home if you have a glucometer
- Inspect your feet for any cuts, blisters or numbness
- Note any unusual thirst, tiredness or frequent urination
Every few months
- Get an HbA1c test to see your 3-month average sugar
- Review your medicines with your doctor
- Check blood pressure, kidney and eye health
See a doctor soon if you have:
- Sugar levels staying high despite medicines
- Wounds that don't heal, especially on the feet
- Frequent giddiness or episodes of very low sugar
- Blurred vision, tingling or numbness in hands/feet
