Do These Things
- Stay calm and time the seizure with a clock or phone
- Gently ease the person to the floor if they are standing
- Turn them onto their side (recovery position)
- Place something soft under the head
- Clear the area of sharp or hard objects
Never Do These
- Do not put anything in the mouth
- Do not try to hold down or restrain the person
- Do not give water, food, or medicine during the fit
- Do not leave the person alone until fully alert
After the Seizure Stops
- Stay with the person as they slowly regain awareness
- Speak softly and reassure them
- Check for injuries like tongue bite or bruises
- Note the duration and pattern to tell the doctor
Call for emergency help if:
- The seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes
- Another seizure starts soon after the first
- The person is injured, pregnant, or diabetic
- This is their first-ever seizure
