A stroke happens when the blood supply to a part of the brain is suddenly cut off. Brain cells begin to be affected within minutes — which is why a stroke is a true emergency. The faster a person reaches the hospital, the better the chance of full recovery. Many people lose precious time simply because they don't recognise the signs.
There is one easy word that can help you act in time: FAST.
The FAST check
F — Face: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?
A — Arms: Ask them to raise both arms. Does one arm drift down or feel weak?
S — Speech: Ask them to say a simple sentence. Is the speech slurred or strange?
T — Time: If you see any of these signs, it's Time to rush to the hospital immediately.
Other warning signs of a stroke
- Sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the body
- Sudden confusion or trouble understanding
- Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
- Sudden severe headache with no known cause
- Sudden dizziness, loss of balance or difficulty walking
Why "time is brain"
The treatments that can dissolve a clot and limit brain damage work best within the first few hours. Reaching a hospital quickly gives doctors the best chance to help. This is why knowing FAST — and acting on it — genuinely saves lives.
